The law requires that everyone who uses a vehicle on the road must keep it in a roadworthy condition at all times.
When to book my car for an MOT?
The first test is required once a car is 3 years old. After that, it will need an MOT every 12 months.
Why choose a Manchetts Renault dealer to book my MOT?
All of our testers are UK Vehicle Inspectorate trained and we will only be using Renault approved parts to carry out any necessary repair work. Also, all our work will be guaranteed for a year.
On the day, our Renault experts will inspect the following:
- Bodywork, doors and mirrors
- Lights and horn
- Brakes
- Steering and suspension
- Tyres and wheels
- Windscreen, wipers and washer bottle
- Exhaust fuel and emissions
- Seats and seatbelts
- Vehicle Identification Number
- Registration plate
You can watch the test from a viewing area but you’re not allowed to interrupt the tester.
Parts that are tested
You can read more about what’s tested for cars and motorcycles.
The MOT guide and inspection manuals tell you everything that’s tested.
MOT test result
Your vehicle can either pass or fail the MOT. If it fails, you’ll get a list of things that need to be fixed.
Passing the MOT
If your vehicle passes the MOT:
- you’ll get an MOT certificate from the test centre
- it will be recorded in the MOT database
Mileage reading
The MOT certificate will show the mileage recorded at the current and previous 3 test passes. This is shown as the ‘odometer reading and history’. Check the mileage on your MOT certificate when you get it. Contact the MOT centre within 28 days if you think it’s wrong. They’ll check the mileage and give you a replacement certificate if the original reading is wrong. If you got your certificate more than 28 days ago, report the mistake to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) instead. You’ll need proof of what the mileage was close to the time of the MOT, for example service receipts.Email photos or scans of any documents to DVSA. You can also send copies by post. Don’t send original versions of your documents as they won’t be returned.
Failing the MOT
If your vehicle fails the MOT:
- you’ll get a ‘refusal of an MOT test certificate’ from the test centre
- it will be recorded in the MOT database
You can appeal the result if you think it’s wrong.
Driving a vehicle that’s failed
You can take your vehicle away if your MOT certificate is still valid. If your MOT has run out you can take your vehicle to:
- have the failed defects fixed
- a pre-arranged MOT test appointment
In both cases, your vehicle still needs to meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness at all times or you can be fined.
Retest after a repair
In some cases your vehicle can have a partial retest for free or a reduced MOT fee.
Leaving your vehicle for repair
You only need a partial retest if you leave the vehicle at the test centre for repair and it’s retested within 10 working days. There’s no fee for this.

Brake Fluid
Brake Fluid provides a hydraulic link between the brake pedal and the brakes. Over time, brake fluid becomes contaminated with water and a severe contamination can lead to brake failure. Replacing the brake fluid at the recommended interval maintains the vehicle braking performance and extends the life of braking components.
Diagnostics
All modern cars contain on-board computers that monitor or control things like emissions levels, engine temperature and even windscreen wipers. When things go wrong, these computers produce error codes which can only be read with vehicle diagnostics equipment. You may see a warning light on your dashboard, but these only give a small part of the full picture.
Our car diagnostic check picks up these errors and identifies what they mean, so component failures can be prevented before they lead to further damage or expensive repairs!
